American Medical Writers Association - AMWA promotes excellence in biomedical communications through an extensive educational program and networking opportunities. This medium-sized organization is renown for its workshops of interest to a wide variety of new and experienced medical writers and editors. The online directory is helpful to both professionals and businesses that need assistance with medical communications, as well as to AMWA members who provide freelance services. The directory is searchable by freelance services, subjects, media, and addresses.

Board of Editors in the Life Sciences - BELS was founded in 1991 to evaluate the proficiency of manuscript editors in the life sciences and to award credentials similar to those obtainable in other professions. The 3-hour examination is offered periodically, such as in conjunction with the annual AMWA meeting.

The Council of Science Editors, formerly The Council of Biologic Editors - CSE is a small organization that aims to improve scientific communication by educating authors, editors, and publishers; providing means of cooperation among these people; and promoting effective communication practices in publishing.

Drug Information Association - DIA provides a neutral global forum for the exchange and dissemination of information on the discovery, development, evaluation, and utilization of medicines, and related healthcare technologies. Their web page, Information Central, has useful hyperlinks for medical writers.

National Association of Science Writers - NASW was founded to "foster the dissemination of accurate information regarding science through all media normally devoted to informing the public." Membership benefits include contact with other science reporters, regional meetings, special benefits for freelancers such as insurance, and a mailing list of more than 2000 science writers.

National Writers’ Union - The National Writers Union is the only labor union that represents freelance writers in all genres, formats, and media. Its members receive valuable services including grievance assistance, contract advice, a job hotline, health insurance, and much more.

Society for Technical Communications - STC is the largest professional organization serving the technical communication profession. Their journal is excellent and their web page, Technical Communication Resources, lists many resources from indexing to online help to usability.
